While picketing is an excellent way to meet colleagues, build solidarity and share your thoughts with the general public, it can also be tiring, frustrating and demoralizing, especially when our bodies and minds are not cooperating.
Sugary snacks can weaken our bodies and minds by leading us to crash merely minutes after ingestion, but healthy snacks do the exact opposite. They improve your mood, endurance and excitement while keeping you focused on your cause. We know that it is not always easy to make time to prioritize healthier options, so we made a list of healthier snack options to keep you healthy while you picket.
Regardless of where any of us stand on the strike, we can all agree that a healthier workforce is in everyone's best interest! Here's our list of top 8 snacks for higher energy and endurance;
- Trail mix: Trail mix is a great snack for picketing because it's portable and provides a mix of healthy fats, protein, and carbohydrates. Look for a mix that includes nuts, seeds, and dried fruits to keep you energized throughout the day.
- Dark chocolate: Dark Chocolate can be enjoyed on their own or in other forms like chocolate covered almonds, fruits, etc. Be careful to find 70% or higher and have as low sugar content as possible to enjoy iron & antioxidants.
- Fresh fruit: Fresh fruit is a great source of natural sugar, vitamins, and fiber. Apples, bananas, and oranges are easy to pack and can help regulate your body temperature in hot or cold weather.
- Hard-boiled eggs: Hard-boiled eggs are a good source of protein and healthy fats, which can help you stay full and energized. They're also easy to pack and can be eaten on the go.
- Yogurt: Yogurt is a great source of protein and probiotics, which can help support digestive health. Look for yogurt that's low in added sugars and high in protein.
- Hummus and vegetables: Hummus is a good source of protein and healthy fats, and it pairs well with raw vegetables like carrots, celery, and bell peppers. This snack provides a good balance of nutrients to keep you going throughout the day.
- Energy bars: Energy bars are a convenient snack that's high in protein and fiber. Look for bars that are low in added sugars and high in whole food ingredients.
- Popcorn: Popcorn is a low-calorie snack that's high in fiber and can help regulate body temperature. Look for popcorn that's lightly salted or flavored with herbs and spices, rather than butter or other high-fat toppings.
Remember to pack your snacks in a cooler or insulated bag if you'll be out in the sun, and drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. Not sure where to get these, they will be carried at most grocery stores, especially in the health food section if you want to narrow your search a bit.
If you see us on the picket lines, we will be spreading unity and wellness through some free healthy snacks we have picked up from Costco - the portions there are larger but many options do come in individually wrapped portions.
